Travelling to Cancún and the Riviera Maya from Canada: Documents, Visitax and Practical Tips

Good news: with a Canadian passport, no tourist visa is required for a stay of up to 180 days in Mexico. A few things are still worth checking before you leave: passport validity, the digital migration form (FMM), the Quintana Roo Visitax contribution, travel insurance and your choice of flight. This guide brings together what the official sources say (the Government of Canada, Mexico's National Migration Institute, the Government of Quintana Roo and the Government of Québec) so that your trip to Cancún or the Riviera Maya starts without surprises.

Before you book

Entering Mexico with a Canadian passport

Here is what the Government of Canada (the Mexico page on travel.gc.ca, updated October 19, 2026) and Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) provide. Check this information before buying non-refundable tickets.

Passport and length of stay

  • Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay. The airline may require a longer validity: check with it.
  • No tourist visa for a stay of up to 180 days.
  • The 180 days are not granted automatically: the immigration officer sets the number of days.
  • It is not possible to extend the stay from within Mexico.

Digital FMM (FMMd)

  • It applies to all foreign nationals entering Mexico by air.
  • It is downloaded after arrival, by scanning the QR code at the immigration checkpoints or on the INM website, only once and within the days granted.
  • It proves that your immigration status is in order (tourist or business). The officer stamps the passport and writes down the authorized length of stay.
  • Always keep a copy of your FMM: it is the proof of your legal stay.

If you hold dual Canadian and Mexican citizenship

The Government of Canada recommends using a valid Canadian passport to return to Canada by air, and identifying yourself as a Mexican citizen when entering and leaving Mexico.

What the immigration officer may ask for

In Cancún, the immigration officer decides on your entry and sets the length of your stay: the officer stamps the passport and writes down the authorized length. To obtain more days, the Government of Canada indicates that you may be asked for:

  • information about your accommodation;
  • proof that you have sufficient funds;
  • a return or onward ticket;
  • a letter of invitation, if you are staying with someone.

A package with a confirmed flight and hotel, with the confirmations in your name, helps you present this information. Also keep your FMM until the end of the trip.

Visitax: the Quintana Roo contribution for foreign tourists

Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are in the State of Quintana Roo. The state charges foreign tourists a contribution called Visitax, for the use of public property. It is separate from the plane ticket, the hotel and the FMM.

It can be paid before the trip, during the stay or before leaving Quintana Roo, online on the state government's official website, visitax.gob.mx (in Spanish), or at Cancún airport.

There are unofficial sites that charge more: pay only on the official website. The amount and the terms can change, and the state government has announced a review of the scheme: check them on the official site before you leave.

The flight, the time, the outlets and the currency

Air Canada and Air Transat sell flights to Cancún from Montréal, Québec City, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver, with more flights in winter. Check with the airline whether the flight is nonstop and on which dates it operates. Air Canada has announced nonstop flights between Calgary and Cancún from December 11, 2026 to April 11, 2027 (seasonal service). For the other cities, our advisors check the stopovers and schedules when preparing your quote.

Time, outlets and currency

Quintana Roo is on UTC-5 all year, with no daylight saving time: the time is the same as in Toronto, Montréal and Québec City in winter, and one hour behind in summer.

Outlets are type A and B, as in Canada, at 127 V: an adapter is generally not needed.

The currency is the Mexican peso (MXN), and cards are widely accepted. The language of the country is Spanish. With us, you can write in English on WhatsApp.

For a ticket only, see our page on flights.

Travel insurance and health

The Government of Canada recommends buying travel insurance that covers hospitalization abroad and medical evacuation.

Provincial health plans cover little or nothing outside Canada. For example, for Québec residents, the Government of Québec states that the RAMQ reimburses only part of the medical costs incurred outside Québec and does not cover medication bought outside Québec. It recommends buying private insurance before you leave. Compare the coverage with your insurer or broker before you book.

When to travel and which package to choose

The hurricane season

According to the Government of Canada, the hurricane season in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico runs from early June to the end of November. If you travel during that period, watch the advisories and plan for insurance and flexible fares. The offer of flights from Canada is larger in winter: book early if you are aiming for that season.

All-inclusive or flight + hotel

For a first stay in Cancún or the Riviera Maya, an all-inclusive is a simple option: meals, drinks and hotel activities are already paid for. If you prefer to go out to eat and get around at your own pace, we prepare a flight + hotel package.

Tell us the kind of trip you want, and we suggest areas: Cancún, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, or Tulum.

Consular help on the ground

The Consulate of Canada in Cancún is at Centro Empresarial, Suite E7, Blvd. Kukulcan km 12, Zona Hotelera, Cancún. Phone: +52 55 5724 9795. Email: cncun@international.gc.ca.

In an emergency, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa can be reached at 001-800-514-0129, toll-free from Mexico.

Frequently asked questions from Canadian travellers

Do I need a visa to go to Cancún with a Canadian passport?

No. According to the Government of Canada, a tourist visa is not required for a stay of up to 180 days in Mexico. Your passport must be valid for the whole of your stay (the airline may require more). Note that the 180 days are not granted automatically: the immigration officer sets the number of days on arrival, and it is not possible to extend the stay from within Mexico.

What is the digital FMM and how do I get it?

The digital FMM (multiple migration form), or FMMd, applies to all foreign nationals entering Mexico by air. It is downloaded after arrival, by scanning the QR code displayed at the immigration checkpoints or on the website of Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM), only once and within the days granted. Keep a copy: it proves that your stay is in order.

What is Visitax, and where do I pay it?

It is a contribution charged by the State of Quintana Roo to foreign tourists, separate from the hotel and the plane ticket. It can be paid before the trip, during the stay or before leaving Quintana Roo, online at visitax.gob.mx or at Cancún airport. Pay only on the official website, because unofficial sites charge more. The amount and the terms can change: check them on the official site before you leave.

Do I need travel insurance, or does my provincial health plan cover me?

The Government of Canada recommends travel insurance that covers hospitalization abroad and medical evacuation. Provincial health plans cover little or nothing outside Canada. For example, according to the Government of Québec, the RAMQ reimburses only part of the medical costs incurred outside Québec and does not cover medication bought outside Québec: it recommends buying private insurance before you leave.

What is the time difference, and do I need an adapter?

Quintana Roo is on UTC-5 all year, with no daylight saving time: the time is the same as in Toronto, Montréal and Québec City in winter, and one hour behind in summer. Outlets are type A and B, as in Canada, at 127 V: an adapter is generally not needed. The currency is the Mexican peso (MXN) and cards are widely accepted.

Our booking portal is in Spanish, and some cards issued outside Mexico may be declined. If that happens, tell us which trip you chose: your advisor completes the purchase with you on WhatsApp.
